صاحب هذا الديوان هي ليلى بنت عبد الله ونسبتها تعود إلى جدها معاوية المعروف بالأخيل. اشتهرت بقصة حبها العفيف لتوبة بن الحمير، وكان شاعراً مبرزاً في قومه خطبها توبة إلى أبيها، فأبى أن يزوّجه إياها، وكانت قصة حبّ شاعت، وشاعت قصائدها وبقيت خالدة تتناقلها الأجيال. كانت ليلى من أشعر النساء، لا يقدم عليها في الشعر غير الخنساء. وكان لليلى ديوان شعري مشهور. وقد تناوله الكثير من الباحثين بالتحقيق.
