تغطي الرواية جانباً من المرحلة الأكثر قسوة في التاريخ الإسلامي في الأندلس بعد سقوطها، المرحلة الموريسكية، حيث تم إجبار المسلمين على اعتناق المسيحية، ومن ثم مراقبتهم لمعرفة "صدق مسيحيتهم"، عبر محاكم التفتيش. من هذه النقطة الظلامية، من محاكمة إحدى السيدات الموريسكيات وقتلها، تبدأ الرواية متخذة تاريخ 1592 بداية مثيرة لها. كان لا بد لغونثالث، الرجل الإسباني الكاثوليكي، أن يُشعل الشك في قلبه المؤمن برواية المحكمة، حول السبب الحقيقي الذي أدى إلى مقتل أمه، ولماذا قالت له أمه فيما تودّع الحياة: أنت عربي مسلم، واسمك عيسى بن محمد. فما الحكاية، وما السر؟
