نعرف منذ الأسطر الأولى أن الرجل الجالس أمام المحقق دخل الثكنة هاربا من سكان دوّار "سيدي مجدوب"، الوليّ الصالح الذي نبش قبره مع صديقه الألماني بحثا عن آثار قديمة. يجد البطل نفسه في مواجهة تُهم عديدة منها التآمر على الوطن بالعمل مع جهات أجنبية ومنها القتل، وتُعرض عليه صفقة: توفير الحماية من الحشود الغاضبة في مقابل الاعتراف بكل شيء. وفي رحلة الاستنطاق يجنح إلى غواية السرد مرتدّا إلى ماض يكشف جذور أزمته، وتنطلق حكايات يتداخل فيها الواقعي والمتخيل، والوهم والحقيقة.
