بعد سجنه لأربع سنوات، يظهر “سعيد مهران” عازمًا على الانتقام. يجد عالمه وقد تحوَّل كثيرًا، فقد تبدل الحال بقيام ثورة 1952، أما على مستوى حياته الشخصية، فقد تزوجت زوجته السابقة “نبوية” من تابعه وذراعه الأيمن “عليش” وقررا أن يحرماه من ابنته “سناء”. أما معلمه وأستاذه الثوري “رؤوف علوان” فقد انضم إلى الصفوة وانقلب على أفكاره وشعاراته. يسعى سعيد لتحقيق العدالة على طريقته، فينتهي به الحال مطاردًا مدفوعًا بالكراهية لدرجة لا يستطيع معها التعرف على فرصته الأخيرة في الحب والخلاص. نُشرت الرواية عام 1961 وانتقلت سريعًا لشاشة السينما حيث أنتج فيلم “اللص والكلاب” عام 1962.
