تدور رواية "ذكريات نائمة" - كعادة باتريك موديانو (نوبل 2014) - في أحياء باريس ومقاهيها وأزقتها وسينماتها، تتبع الرواية علاقة شاب بعدة نساء خلال طفولته وشبابه، من المدرسة الثانوية حتى سن الخامسة والعشرين. تتداخل ذكريات البطل مع حاضره وتحتل الأم مركز الصدارة في تلك الذكريات، تبرز في ذهن البطل شخصيات وأسماء ثم تغيب فجأة .. ينساها وتنساه.يتشبث البطل بمحاولة رتق تلك الذاكرة الضبابية للأماكن والبشر عن طريق تدوين أسماء الأماكن والناس والعناوين، والسير حسب الخرائط. بينما يعاني البطل من الشعور بالهجر والنكران، يحاول إيقاظ تلك الذكريات النائمة. أما باريس رحم الحكاية فكانت تغرق الرواي بالرغبة في الهروب والإحساس الدائم بالخطر!
