تبدأ الحكاية في العام 2030 في المدينة البيضاء، زمن ثورة الخنازير، حين تُستخرج الجثّة المحنّطة لمختار الفاطمي بأمر عسكري، بقصد تشريحها. لتنطلق معها روح مختار، العالقة في الصندوق لسنوات، لتلاحق مصير الجثّة وتستحضر حياة الباحث الشاب في مدينته التونسية، ورحلته البحثية إلى القاهرة والإسكندريّة؛ للبحث عن تاريخ أجداده الفاطميين. تسرد هذه الرواية الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل بطريقة استشرافية تجعل القارئ يصدق أحداثها المدهشة واللامعقولة كأنها حدثت بالفعل.
