تتحدث الرواية حول معاناة المهاجرين في بلاد الغربة وظروف حياتهم، ذكرياتهم وأحلامهم، هي شخصيات غير منقطعة عن ماضيها، ولكنها في ذات الوقت لا تنتظر شيئاً من مستقبلها. ما يميز أسلوب آغوتا كريستوف أنها قد اختصرت الكلام السردي إلى أدنى درجة ممكنة إذ جعلت الأحداث في سردها لها تحدث فقط هكذا من دون مقدمات إنشائية أو كتابية… فهي جمل قصيرة وكلها متعجلة. وكأن الروائية تحاول نزع المشاعر من الحياة من دون مقدمات وتنحو صوب الكتابة المباشرة، مما جعل النقاد يعتبرون كتاباتها مستقلة عن النص السردي، ومعزولة عنه.
